mewithoutyou (post tagged with verses Mt. 6:14&15), you said, "some people use these verses to support their belief that salvation is not based on accepting Jesus. it seems like a legitimate argument. can someone please clarify this for me?" That argument is actually very dangerous and wrong. The argument may seem valid, but it is not.

You see, we can't be forgiven by the Father if we don't know the Father. And we can't know the Father unless we have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ! (Ephesians 2:18 - "For through [Christ] we both have access to the Father by one Spirit." Galatians 2:16 - "Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.")

We can only get salvation through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:13-15 says - "But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ [through what? Forgiving others? No...through the blood of Christ]. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace..."

Hope God blesses you with this!
