Genesis 1:2 ASV

From the moment I begin reading the Bible I am faced with my own arrogance. The creation account that once sounded marvelous and mystical to me as a child now sounds impossible and improbable as an adult.

But I've learned not to read the Bible as a research tool; as science. That wasn't the writers' purpose and it certainly wasn't Moses' here. Do I believe that Genesis 1 is literal? Yes. But the Bible doesn't say a lot more than it does say, so I must trust God's word despite the fact it is littered with mystery and improbability. I must trust God in the face of my attacked sense of reason.

The fact is that the Bible begins by attacking my pride and it ends that way. (Ever read Revelation with a straight face?) It begins with the seemingly impossible and ends with the impossible. And my response - every person's response - must be to trust the wisdom of God - wisdom that has no beginning and has no end.

God is greatly to be praised. He is worthy and holy and awesome. And I am an ant. Cursed be me the day that I judge God's word as foolish.
