What is the sustenance of your life?
Many times this passage is taught with an emphasis on overcoming temptation. That's good, for that is the very context of the passage, but Matthew 4:4 stands out to me for a different reason. Jesus says what he says in response to Satan wanting Him to turn stones into bread. Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, which in context is about God allowing the people to go hungry in the wilderness. When God saw fit, He fed the people, but he let them go hungry for a time so that they would know that they do not live solely by bread, but by the very words of God. Now, let us be clear that God has certainly ordained that food sustain the human body, but food only sustains because God has ordained food that food sustain. And lets be clear, just because you ate a good meal for breakfast, lunch, or dinner does not guarantee your next breath. And if you die, the pressing issue will not be what you ate, but what you did with the word of God. Your life is not found in food, but your life is found in the word of God. The word of God is a matter of life and death. The word of God is of supreme importance. It is the believers road map casting a perspective on life that will lead to success. So that you will know that these are not my thoughts, but the Lord's consider Joshua 1:8, This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth, you are to meditate on it day and night, so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper (not necessarily according to worldly standards, but according to God's standards)and succeed in whatever you do. I pray that you will have a lofty and fearful view of the Scriptures, for contained with in them is everything we need to live a righteous life (2 Timothy 3:16), so that by the way we live in every arena of life men may know that there is no one like our God. He is perfectly righteous, just, merciful, and loving. He always thinks, feels, and acts the right way toward everything. And he has promised that by his divine power we have been given everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness (2 Peter 1:3). We are not perfect for sure, but I pray that people would smell Christ upon our lives. That all of our thoughts, feelings and actions are more and more everyday conformed to the image of Christ and when we fail we repent and ask for forgiveness from Christ and those we have offended. Oh, may men observe our lives and give glory to our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).
