As Christians, we often say that one of the consequences of the fall was the loss of fellowship with God. Yet, Cain freely communicates with God in this text. (Note: How else would Cain have known that God did not accept his sacrifice? How did Cain perceive God's voice?) After the fall (and considering the darkness of Cain's heart) Cain could readily hear the voice of God. Yet, this is a reality that we long for, as believers, to be restored to us. Could it have been that God soveriegnly and uniquely spoke to Cain, intervening in his life to shape human history according to his will? Or was there some residual fellowship with the creator that remained among Adam's immediate seed? (After all, Cain and Abel would have certainly heard stories of their parents unfettered fellowship with God.) Fascinating. And as I like to say, what Genesis does say is much less than what it does NOT say! What a testament to the mystery of God! (Could this actually be the point of this book?)
