Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered. He must have seen or known that this direction would take him near the wickedness of Sodom, yet that did not deter him. This is the first step towards trouble for Lot, for in chapter 14 we soon read that he was living in Sodom!

In contrast, Abram was focused on his relationship with God - his first act was to build an altar to the Lord.

But, lest we criticize Lot too harshly, are we prone to similar decisions? Do I step towards the apparently easier or more beneficial alternative even though it takes me perilously close to the "world" and its ways, thinking I can handle it? Or, do I consciously decide to stay close to God regardless of the circumstances?
