Low Pay, High Community
I LOVE the value of community in the New Testament. The church is a community. (At least, it is supposed to be a community.) I'm sure there are bigger reasons at play here on why Jesus instructed the disciples not to charge for their ministry services, but I have seen what happens when a traveling minister requires a hotel room, a set honorarium, and special treatment, rather than simply trusting God that wherever he lodges and whatever he's paid and whomever he meets is a divine appointment. This kind of special treatment almost completely halts any chance to build a relationship with that person. They are insulated from relationship. "I'll pick you up at the hotel at 6:45." Jesus didn't want this to happen. Not his disciples. "As you enter a house, greet it." Don't take extra clothes, money, etc. "Find who is worthy [in that town] and stay there."
