Genesis 1:1 ASV, Genesis 1:2 ASV, Genesis 1:3 ASV and Genesis 1:4-5 ASV

On the first day of creation, God created the earth and the heavens. At first, there was no light and no ground on the surface. God created light (not the sun) and named it Day, and the darkness he called Night.

v5 describes "evening and the morning were the first day" - the Jews took this to mean that the day begins at night, so they would say Evening (sun down), Morning, Afternoon describes a day in contrast to how we view a day as morning (midnight), afternoon, evening.
