Growing Uppity
I used to have a job where I would occasionally have to evaluate drivers to see if they are ready to be officially licensed to drive solo.
In reading this passage, I think of how kids will call "shotgun" when they go someplace. Riding shotgun is not just to be able to see, but to be in a place of honor at the right hand of the one in control of where the car is going. In the case of an adult riding shotgun with an inexperienced driver, it is also a position of responsibility to intervene when things are about to go awry, a place of instruction.
If Jesus is at the wheel, why in the world would he want us in a position where we may be tempted to intervene or give him instruction?
It's sometimes difficult to see what the driver sees if you're sitting in the back seat directly behind the driver. It's also very difficult to intervene from that position. You have to trust that the driver is competent and in control and can handle anything that comes his way.
