Is the gift of tongues for today? Of course, it did not pass away and nothing of the sort is tought anywhere in scripture. Is speaking in tongues often misused and misunderstood in church? Of course. Paul gives instructions on tongues during public assembly and explains what it's for. In Acts 19:2 Paul ask the new believers if they have received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost since they believe, then he lays hands on them and they speak in tongues. To dismiss tongues as something that has passed away is silly. You would have to believe over 150 million people world wide are in some kind of conspiracy. Paul said I thank God I speak in tongues more than you all. Developing your "prayer language" as some call it can be a huge help in life.
