Matthew 6:6-15 ASV

How often have we talked God's ear off without ever really asking him how He wants us to talk to him? I learned in marriage that I communicate a certain way with my wife, not how I want to be communicated to, but how she wants to be talked to.

I know I have talked to God in ways that doesn't honors His name. I treat Him as the Jeanie in the bottle wishing him to give me something I want. But God wants us to come to him praying with a certain heart in mind, one where he is honored, where we know he knows best, where we come humbly by how we have treated others. seeking him to purify us and keep us from evil.

We are truly blest when we talk to God the way He desires for us to talk to Him. It molds our hearts to the bigger picture of what God is doing in history and pries our hearts and minds from too narrowly focusing on our problem. It keeps us from being petty and selfish and focuses not on us, but God the provider and forgiver and others whom we need to love and forgive. This is the cure for the purely selfish prayer.
