Genesis 27:13 ASV

It's sadly comforting to read these histories of our ancestors. My first thought is that I'm always taken aback by the sin of our forefathers. Based solely on their position, they seem to be towering, godly figures to follow and admire. Yet here is Rebekah, the mother of Israel, God's chosen people, who is a deceitful liar. She tricks her husband into blessing the second born. She's fulfilling the prophecy of "the older serving the younger," but did it have to be achieved in this way? I can't imagine the heartbreak that came to Isaac when his wife deceived him in this way.
My other thought is a spurring on to live a more righteous life in response. If my actions were written down and passed down for thousands of generations, I wouldn't fare any better than these people. It would be humiliating and painful, but maybe living as if this was the case would keep us from much more temptation.
