John 13:21-30 ASV

Q: What kind of person is likely to be "close" to Jesus?
A: This is synchronicity. I was just thinking the same question very recently, and here it is - the opening question of today's devotional. What did it take to be one of Jesus' "inner circle"? What was it about Peter and John that set them apart from the rest of the disciples? Did they sit at the Master's feet, drinking in everything he taught, said, laughed at, cried at, the mannerisms, everything that Jesus did?

I think of those in my own inner circle. Trust. Respect. Love. Freedom to be ourselves. Go out of your way to learn about me, to do things for me. Don't try to hide your emotions. Don't be afraid to ask. Don't freak out when I tell you my deepest darkest secrets and fears. When it's about you it's not about me. Honesty, even if it hurts. Laughter and tears, in their appropriate time. Trustworthy. Uplifting. Common goals. Let's try it - together. Those are some of the things I would expect in my inner circle. I'm sure that's what Jesus looked for in his.

Lord, help me to develop the characteristics of being in Jesus' inner circle. I may not ever be as close as John and Peter ... just a closer walk is what I'm asking. amen
