John 18:15-27 ASV

The juxtaposition of Jesus and Peter are strking. We can't help but feel that Jesus is taking on the world on our behalf and we aren't any help. And yet he does it. He does all he does for us and in spite of us. The point isn't that Peter should have done something so Jesus didn't have to face what was happening. The point is that there are all kinds of ways of standing in opposition to what Jesus is doing. Opposition to him can look like Caiaphas or Annas trying to get him out of the say. It can look like the temple guard making fun of him and physically abusing him. Opposition can look like us when we are like Peter, unwilling to claim the relationship Jesus had offered him.
Opposition doesn't make Jesus wrong. He does what is right and best for us because he wants that best for us even when we can't see it and don't align ourselves with him and make our allegiance public.
Unworthy yet graciously included is what we all are. While we were in the courtyard acting like we didn't know him, Jesus died to bring us to himself.
