You’re hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You keep meticulous account books, tithing on every nickel and dime you get, but on the meat of God’s Law, things like fairness and compassion and commitment—the absolute basics!—you carelessly take it or leave it. (MSG).
They were meticulous on these insignificant things, the spices, but neglected the things which really mattered. Painstaking attention to eternal things of the most trivial kind, tithing on small plants and seeds, they forgot the important matters of the law.
These teachers of the law and Pharisees were distracted by trivial matters. The important matters of the law-justice, mercy and faithfulness were neglected because of their trivial pursuit.
Tragically, the church is often distracted by trivial pursuits while the world goes to hell!
