God not only loves us, but is using everything we experience to shape us into the likeness of Jesus. It’s with this knowledge that we can say “who can be against us,” not because God will prevent opposition, but because he can use anything to bring about his good will. I often confuse the concept of God being for me with the idea that I’ll have complete protection from harm, immediate provision and things will generally go how I want them to. When things go wrong it can be difficult to make sense of it, let alone to see things in light of this passage. What we see here is that God’s ever-present love for us doesn’t mean that trials won’t come and that the presence of trials doesn’t mean his love is now absent. In fact, these verses tell us that God’s love is unwavering in every situation. Let us think about how God might be using today’s circumstances for his good work in and through our lives.
