stop making excuses; get to work
Exodus 4:1 ASV and Exodus 4:13 ASV
Exodus 4.1 “Moses answered, “What if…”A few weekends ago, I taught on this passage to 4/5th graders. We were studying Resourcefulness as our Big Idea for the month. The bottom line was "God will give you what you need to get the job done." I remember thinking that the kids would find it difficult to transfer God calling Moses to help rescue His people from slavery to God calling each of them to make wise choices about how they love their friends.
We tend to think of this passage in terms of life calling, that God is calling us to pastor a congregation or take a vow of poverty to live among the homeless in downtown wherever. But every day we (at least I) make excuses for choices that require simple obedience or forethought. Taking the three giant trash bags of clothes to the Salvation Army (but it's so far away…), shutting down the computer and playing with the kids (but if I just finish writing this last paragraph, my script or teaching will be...), or having that difficult conversation (it’s not really THAT bad, this can wait…). Even The kids came up with great examples: cleaning their rooms, studying for tests, or inviting the “uncool” kid to sit at the lunch table.
God gives us jobs to do: some we’ll enjoy, others that will scare us to death, and some we just won’t want to do. But this account from Moses’ life reminds me that if God is asking me to do something, he pretty much wants ME to do it. As much as I’m scared or apathetic, if I don’t trust and move, I will be missing out on something greater than I can ever ask or imagine. It’s simple; quick making excuses, get up off your seat, and go to work!
