Suffering, it seems, is a prerequisite to growth in God. Here, Paul does not employ the term in a consequential manner. (In other words, he doesn't qualify suffering as the result of our goodness or righteousness. He just says that we simply suffer.) We must suffer with him to be glorified with him.
