freakshow
I'm surprised John the Baptist had the following He did- maybe it was because he was such a freakshow! :o) Everything about him was just the complete opposite of the system in place. For obvious reasons, he appeared different- his clothing, food choices, living arrangements- it was all so unusual. But more than that, what he preached was unlike anything ever heard. Instead of works, rituals and practices, he spoke of repentance and humility. Repentance, not works brought forgiveness of sins. Could this be that God wanted relationship with anyone not just the higher-ups of the day? I wonder how uneasy this made those religious leaders. If they only knew what was coming, right? AND He spoke of someone coming after him. He didn't draw crowds unto himself. He walked in such humility pointing directly to Christ. All this and still the crowds came. Could it be it was the first time that they heard both the gospel AND that John lived in such a way that folks were attracted to that kind of authenticity? His life, his words, his ministry- it was all so different and it always exalted the Christ.
