There are many times when I treat Jesus' miracles as trivial. Call it the curse of growing up in Sunday School, but regardless, I don't think about these accounts in a realistic manner often enough. This passage is a great example. When the disciples initially see this blind man, they caught up in finding blame for his condition. Jesus cuts through the crap and says that the blind man is there for a purpose. The blind man is about to be used for God's glory whithout his knowledge.
Pause story.
How frequently does the church in America genuinely believe in God's power. I'm not talking about his earthquakes, hurricanes, nature power, I'm talking about his stop all wars and cause creation to come into harmony power. I'm guessing that it's not that often. Instead we reduce the creator of the universe into a safety net. For example, a majority of prayer requests seem to center around travel. I'm not saying that God doesn't care about our travel safety, but come on people. We talk to the creator of the universe and our most frequent prayer request is that we'll be safe on a trip? Get ready to be rocked.
Back to story.
So Jesus just finishes explaining that there is work to be done because soon tough times are gonna fall. Jesus approaches the blind man to heal him. Let's think about this from the blind man's perspective, with heightened senses of smell, touch, and hearing. We hear someone walking close and then saliva hitting the ground. Hearing the crunch of gravel and sand mixes together piques the curiousity and we're caught off guard by the sudden strong smell of dirt. Even more surprising is the rough mixture applied to open eyes. There is pain and discomfort, followed by the command to go wash in the pool of Siloam. This would be a welcome comfort as the mud stings. As we are washing the mud out, white light focuses into rushing water. We can see!

Ok, enough dramitization. You get my point though right? Here Jesus heals a man with spit. In case you missed that, with spit. Mud on the eyes. I'm sure everyone was scratching their heads as to what Jesus was doing. Jesus heals in this crazy way and we only ask him for travel safety? Let's grow bold in our prayers and believe in answers to the. Our God is powerful. Let's show it in our lives.
