The Role Of Worship in Daily Life
Numbers 31:6 ASV, Numbers 31:31-35 ASV and Numbers 31:31-50 ASV
I woke up this morning and was reading Numbers 31 which is one of the Life Journal Readings for the day. It starts out fine, God is telling Moses that He is going to send the people to war and to prepare for the battle. In a sense God and His people have the same friends and the same foes. Moses spoke about avenging the Lord because He had been dishonored. It's the same today, we still fight over things that dishonor God. The things of this world, powers, principalities, spiritual darkness. As society becomes more secular and loses its moral compass and starts embracing things that are un-Godly we realize that the battle still rages on today. The exception is that we handle it differently - we realize our battle is not against flesh and blood and we pray, and unite and let our voices be heard - never resort to violent means to achieve Gods goals. While reading numbers one of the things that seemed odd to me was when Moses sent the priest Eleazar with the Israelites into battle and he took some sacred things from the temple and the trumpets for sounding the battle. I wondered about the holy instruments. Why would you take something holy, something clean, something from the temple into battle? In JFB commentary it mentions that the original Hebrew would be written "even" the Trumpets as opposed to "and" the trumpets. The ark of convenant and Umim and Thumim were not taken into battle at this time.
Now it starts to make sense.
Numbers 10:9 says, "When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing you, sound a blast on the trumpets. Then you will be remembered by the Lord your God and rescued from your enemies."
It all comes down to worship. Worship it seems has some practical value in warfare and in gaining the victory. Praise God and He will hear you and rescue you from your enemies.
Psalm 150 says, " Praise Him with the Trumpet" so we know it was an instrument used in the temple/tent for praise.
We see the result of this principle in Numbers 31:49 and 50.
The commanders of the army let Moses know that not one soldier was lost, all were accounted for even though they fought against over whelming odds and so they worship God in turn by giving Him all the gold and jewelry they had taken.
So what does this mean to us today ??
In order to see victory in your life, in order to overcome, in order to win the battle we must spend time worshiping God. Sure, we spend time in prayer and in reading the word, maybe even journaling. We must worship God too.
How can we do this ?????
We can worship God in our quiet time, Worship God while driving (just don't close your eyes). We can worship God by faithfully attending worship service, we can worship God by discovering our God given purpose and fulfilling our life's calling. We worship God with our tithes and offerings. We worship God by making Him known and by declaring the works of His hands. It's amazing how evangelism is part of our worship and how our testimony is also. We will overcome by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony. Love God, honor Him, Lift Him up, seek to do His will, Worship Him and know that He is fighting on your behalf.
