I gotta be honest- I don't see what all the drama is about. Folks are gonna speak in tongues. It's not forbidden. It's not scary. We shoudl desire it. Apparently Paul did it a whole bunch. But when it comes to the corporate assembly, here are some guidelines. Why? Well, isn't it interesting that these guidelines come right after the whole discussion on love. Thats' the answer. Why? Because we love. Because others come first. Tongues exhort us personally unless it's interpreted. So if I'm part of a big assembly, I'm not all tied up in my own personal needs and wants. I'm looking after others. I'm seeing that their needs are met. My agenda is not priority. If it offends, I can hold off. If folks will think we're nuts and reject God because they don't understand, then I'd say that takes precedence. Does it build me up- yes! But can it distract from the building up of the body as a whole when not done in order. Yep. Churches that are unaware of the lost among them are missing out on an opportunity to win them. And no, I absolutley do not believe in watering anything down. It's just that when it comes to this gift, it's for my edification. And if I'm with other tongue talkers, let 'er rip! But if I'm not, keep quiet. No harm no foul. It's just really not that complicated. It shouldn't be a point of argument. If we truly aim to love as Jesus did, my will is irrelevant, no? It may be silly, but I kind of think back to being a little kid and visiting my family in Canada. My relatives (mom included) speak French. I know some basics but can't hang with these fast talkers. But what do they do? Jabber away in front of me. I would just sit there perplexed with a blank look on my face, unable to contribute or get anything out of the conversation. Rude. Well, love is not rude. Just sayin...
