Mark 10:17,18 - None Good but God
I feel this statement served two-fold. First, I think it was a gut-check for the young man who obviously felt like he deserved to go to heaven. If you ready his response to Jesus about keeping the commandments, he answered, "Oh yeah, been there, done that, give me something harder to do." But none can keep all the commandments without fault, except one (Jesus of course). The statement served to dispel the notion that any of us are good. (On a side note, even though Jesus knew he didn't keep all the commandments, He loved him anyways)
The second part is more of a question to the man. "You call me 'good teacher,' yet only God is good. So, do you really think I am God?" He the young man really believed that Jesus was God, then he would have gladly made a sacrifice of everything he had to follow Jesus.
And yet, the question then turns to us. Do you really believe Jesus is God? Do you really think He holds everything we are and can be in His hands? Do you really believe that He lives in us now? Then why do we still hold on to those things that He is pleading with us to let go?
