Counting the Men who can Fight
I'm going to agree with bennettc on this one, perhaps the church should be counting the number of men who can go to war rather than just counting the people who show up on Sundays. In other words, men who are spiritual leaders and who are competent to take the lead in spiritual battle. We need to demonstrate the value of men who are able lead their families in the way of Jesus. More often than not, if the husband is following Jesus and equipping his family to follow Jesus, they will follow Jesus.
In his book, "Why Men Hate Going to Church", David Murrow found that when a mother comes to faith in Christ, the rest of the family follows 17% of the time. But when a father comes to faith in Christ, the rest of the family follows 93% of the time (page 47). This is from a study done by Promise Keepers in 1996, and the numbers seem a bit skewed, but it makes the point nonetheless. The strength of an army is not in it's size, but in those who are able to lead the fight. Now, the great thing about God is that he doesn't need a large army of men to win the battle, he would do just fine without us. But wouldn't we rather be out there fighting?
