Reach Out Reach In
Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd.
So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore‑fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”(NIV)
Jesus knew a receptive heart was waiting for him in Jericho. Even with his physical limitations Zacchaeus pushed through the crowd and climbed a tree to get to see Jesus. Jesus could have very well blown Zacchaeus off. Zacchaeus was considered a reject an outcast of society. Tax collectors were hated and despised. They made profits on ripping people off on paying taxes. No one would think twice if Jesus walked by this outcast, this reject of society in a tree.
Jesus is not swayed by the opinions of men. Praise the Lord! No! He goes up to Zacchaeus, tells him to get out of the tree and tells him he will be staying at his house. How are we doing in this department? Do we reach out to the rejects and outcasts of our society? What are our excuses? We all can do something.....
Here is another idea. A bit of a different twist to these verses. How about reaching out to the rejects and outcasts who are in our churches each week? Look around..... The people who sit by themselves week after week at church. People we see but never sit with or go to lunch with because we have our own little "group" at church we always sit or eat lunch with. They are there. They sit week after week at church hoping to be included. We are supposed to be different not like the world. Church is not some Christian country club.
Christ is our example. We can pattern our lives after Him. We can reach out to the rejects and outcasts of society with the message of Jesus Christ. We can reach in and look within the four walls of church to encourage those who are alone and lonely. Again, we can all do something.....
