Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1 both start out the same way..."In the beginning" . John seems to be pointing the readers toward an understanding that Jesus was involved in creation from the first breath that spoke the world into existance. The "Word" refers to Jesus who spoke the world into existance. The eternal God who was the first word and will have the last word.
