Religious Pedigree
Notice how Matthew’s account of Jesus' ancestors only mentions four mothers, all of whom were involved in some sort of scandal. In fact Bathsheba's scandal must have been so bad by Matthew’s standards that he did not list her name; only that she was the wife of Uriah. Could it be that God inspired Matthew to record it this way so we would be careful not think too highly of our religious and/or ancestral pedigrees? I mean, “I must be a Christian because my mother was, right?” Jesus’ ancestry included not-so-perfect people. This may also fly in the face of legalism. Legalists tend to place too much emphasis on salvation by close adherence to religious rules and piety. (See Galatians 3:2)The Pharisees would pray in public to impress. (See Matt. 6:5)
