Galatians 2:20
In a lot of ways, I look at Galatians as a kind of essay that Paul has written, in order to express why we can find justification in Jesus and not through expectations (or the law) of men.
Earlier on, he writes, 'Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.' (Gal 1:10) Paul is really laying out two choices for us - to live to please men, or to live for Christ. I like to think of Galatians 2:20 as Paul's thesis. It's his response to 1:10, and the basis of the entire letter. In 2:20 Paul explains that if I accept Christ as my saviour, then I have died with Him, to the law, to pleasing other people around me. I no longer live separate from Jesus Christ. I live my life BY faith in Him. I live by my faith in Christ who gave everything for me. So, in turn I need to give everything for Him, not to please other people.
