1 Corinthians 10:13 ASV

*** Temptation***

***1. What is Temptation???
*** According to the Bible it is often the combination of a real need and a possible doubt that create an inappropiate desire...

*** Temptation will often occur after a high point in our spiritual lives or ministries...
*** Satan chooses the time for his attacks... WHY???

***2... Matthew 4:1-11***

*** Then Jesus was led up by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil...
*** The word Then has emphasis on it...
*** What does Then mean???
***A.) It shows us that He was led and tempted by the enemy after His victory...

***B.) What was Jesus's Victory???
*** Go back to Matthew 3:16-- Get someone to read it...

*** Matthew 4:3-11***

*** Here come the Temptations***

1."If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread"
*** Counter Attack*** " It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God"

*** What is Jesus saying here...

A. It shows us that Jesus is saying that we do not have to live, but we do have to obey every Word of God...
B. The temptation here is physical need- Will God provide food???

2. " If You are the Son of God, throw yourself down for it is written:
*** COunter Attack*** "It is written again: "You shall not tempt the Lord your God"

***A.) The temptation here is: Emotional need- Would God protect you if???

3. All these things, I will give You if You will fall down and worship me...
** Counter Attack*** Away with you, Satan, For it is written: " You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve..."

*** A.) The temptation here is phychological need: Would God rule??? Here, I offer You, quick and easy power,, so that You will not have to go through the torture and pain...

*** Notes***

1. The purpose of these temptations wasnt to see if Jesus would sin, but it was to prove that even under tremendous pressure, He could do nothing but obey the Word of God.

A.) Jesus was led into the temptation by the Holy Spirit, but we must pray not to be led into temptation... Because Jesus's nature was that He could not sin, but He was still tempted... ( Goes to show that it doesnt matter how Holy or pure you are, you are still vulnerable to temptation...

1 HOw does temptation begin??

*** 1.Now, with us, since we are not Jesus or God and we are flesh: James 1:14-15 states- But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15- Then, when the desire has concieved, it gives birthto sin; and sin, when it is full grown, brings death...
*** Basically***- Temptation begins with an evil thought and becomes sin when we dwell on the thought and allow it to become an action.

*** Encouargement***

1. 1 Corinthians 10:13-- Read:

*** Paul is saying these things: 1. wrong desires and temptaions happen to everyone, no one is skipped.
2. others have resisted temptation, so can you
3. any temptationcan be resisted, because God will help you resist it.
*** God helps us resist the temptation by***
1. giving us discernment, of those people and situations that temp us..
2. tellings us to run from anything that we know is wrong... 1 Timothy 6:11, and 2 Timothy 2:22- tells us to flee,, from things not of God..
3. God says to choose only to do right..
4. Pray for Gods help
5. seek friends who love God and can offer help when you are tempted.... 2 Timothy 2:22 Running is your first victory...

Faith without works is dead!!!
A Christians duty is to flee, pursue, fight, and lay hold... We must have an active Faith..

Closing
1. Great privalages, special tokens of divine favor or anything will secure us from temptations... Look at Jesus..
2. After great honor is placed on us, we must expect something that is humbling..
3. The assuarance of our Sonship is the best preparative for temptations...

Basically... our relationship with Christ must be strong and intimate, and if we allow the Holy Spirit to take over, take lead, and guide us, then He will furnish us with the answer to overcome the evil temptations...
