I just love Peter's answer- "Go back? To what?" (paraphrase of course) But essentially, this is what he was saying. Peter had so separated himself from his former life that there was nothing to return to. I've talked with so many folks that still feel that pull to live in the past- the tug of the world. But when we truly decide to Follow Christ, then in that moment, we leave the past behind. We don't even look back to remember it. We separate oursleves from who we used to be. That old song I love just floods my mind when I read Peter's response- "I have decided to follow Jesus, no turnign back. Though none go with me, still I will follow." There's nothing to return to if we've truly left our past in the past.
