Mission and method
If Mathew 28:19 is our mission, then here Paul summarizes our method.
By using the analogy of an Olympic athlete we can't miss his intent to convey total commitment in a stripped down, lean, strong, life... that is focused on denying the baggage and trappings of either the religious traditions of men or the pleasures of the world in order to gain flexibility and humility in serving people who may be caught in those very traps (law, lawlessness, or weakness) with the gospel.
1 Cor 9:19-23 is the model of the Christian life, and the church to reach the world.
