Great Leaders
The text says that David became greater an d greater and then goes on to list the name of the great men that served with him.
There is a direct connection to David's greatness and the men that served.
Mathew Henry mentions that "much of the strength and honor of great men is borrowed from their servants and depends upon them" -- see MH on this chapter 1 Chron 11
Think about it this way, David is great largely because of the great men around him. Take the men away and his simply is where he was before.
Think of this in light of the church.
1. A pastor becomes more effective when he/she has surrounded themselves with an effective ministry team.
2. The church becomes great when it is bolstered by great men and women.
Application
As a pastor you have cannot just promote anyone to leadership, you have to seek out those who are willing to serve. Metaphorically "Those who are unafraid of the odds - They would lift their spear against many or defend a tiny pile of beans or break through the ranks of the enemy"
These are the type of people every pastor wishes he/she was surrounded with.
The pastors function here is to invest time and energy into helping those serving alongside him/her strong leaders and those serving have the responsibility of serving through good times and bad in order to see the vision that God has given that specific church come to fruition. As a servant leader don't whine, don't be afraid, don't put your pastor down instead hold his/her arms up when they are tired an analogy of what happened with Moses. Remember a pastor cannot do everything, take away the good people that serve alongside him and the pastor will be where he was before.
