Walking by the Spirit
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
Here it says that we are debtors not to the flesh and if not to the flesh than we are debtors to the Spirit of God to live righteously. In other words we owe it to the Spirit to live guided by Him.
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
How do we put to death those things of the flesh? By starving those things of the flesh. Example, looking at things on TV that are sexually emoral, we must change the channel every time and never feed the flesh. Like this we will starve the flesh and kill it. Take that from the flesh which feeds it and you will kill it.
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
We must be obedient to the Spirit of God. How? Simply be obedient to the word of God and every time you are doing something that you are not supposed to do and you feel that inner voice telling you to stop. Than stop and do God's will not just when you know that you should not do something but everytime that you are trying to make a decision whether good or bad. Ask Him, a mentor or leader in your church, seek His word for the answer, like this you will be led by the Spirit. Only knowing that Spirit can you let by the Spirit.
15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, Abba! Father!
You want to fall back into sin, let any type of fear come into your life and remain, specially a fear of falling into sin and you will eventually fall back into that sin which you used to have in your life and you fought so long to overcome.
16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
In order for the Spirit to bear witness in you, you must starve your flesh and give Him control of your life.
17 and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
We are heirs with Christ. Notice that this statement follows walking by the Spirit or in other words in Holiness. So in order for us to receive our inheritance we must walk in Holiness.
