The Belt of Truth
The Belt of Truth
(1)Let’s look in more detail in the first part of vs 14 where it says to “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your waist”. The Hebrews believed that the waist area is where our generative power resides as a basis of creation.
(a) Therefore the source of our generative power should be based on the True things of God or the truth as taught in the Christian religion, respecting God and the execution of his purposes through Christ.
(b)Other versions word it: “having girded your loins with truth”. The Greek word for girded has the connotation “to fasten garments with a girdle or belt” meaning that this requires some effort on our part because you need to put on a belt, it just doesn’t get there by itself. Likewise we need to:
(i) Colossians 3:7 - 11 (NIV) 7You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
(c) How are we supposed to put on this belt of truth then, if we do not spend time in his Word? Statistical research shows that less than 10% of professing Christians have ever read the entire Bible.
(i) 2 Timothy 3:16 - 17 (NIV) 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
(ii) Therefore, we need to spend more time in His Word to equip us to serve Him! This should not be just a quick reading, but reading with focused intent in order to implement what the Word says into our lives. This though is reflected in:
1. James 1:22 - 25 (NIV) 22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.
(2)Thank you, Lord, for showing us the truth about You! Thank you for reminding us that You are the only God, the Creator of heaven and earth, the King of the universe, our Father who loves us, and our Shepherd who leads us. You are our wisdom, our counselor, our hope, and our strength. Thank You for being everything we need each day.
