The Helmet of Salvation
The Helmet of Salvation
(1)Let’s move on to verse 17 of our original scripture in Eph 6 where it talks about the Helmet of Salvation!
(a) We are commanded in the second word of this verse to “take” it. The word “take” in the Greek means so much more than the word does in our language. First it implies action on our part, we are commanded to take a hold of it. Then it implies that we are supposed to receive it and learn everything there is to learn about it.
(2)Next we have the word Helmet, which typically means something that protects. So a Helmet normally protects your head from injury, but in this case it refers to protecting your soul. In total then when we look at Helmet of Salvation, it means that salvation protects your soul from eternal damnation, which is where we could be without Jesus.
(a) Another way of saying this is found in
(b)1 Thessalonians 5:8 - 9 (NIV) 8But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
(3) If there is anyone in the audience today that has not accepted this gift of salvation let me give you something to think about.
(a) You need to ask yourself right now if I die today, where am I going? Like it or not, we all have eternal life, so we are all going to live somewhere – forever – when we leave this earthly body. Unfortunately there are only two choices, either Heaven or hell. Equally unfortunate is the fact that the default location – if you do nothing – is eternal punishment in hell and satan is trying to hide this fact from you.
(i) Jesus himself gave this example in the bible in Luke 16:19 - 31 (NIV) 19“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22“The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In hell,£ where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ 25“But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’ 27“He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29“Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30“‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31“He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”
(b)Fortunately God provided a very simple way for you to receive this protection for your soul, this Gift of Salvation.
(i) John 3:16 (NIV) 16“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,£ that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
(ii) It also says in Romans 10:10 (NIV) that it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
(iii) I will let you think about this as we move on to the final topic of this discussion, and that is:
