One Man Against the World
Not to long ago from when God invented humans, did humans slip into sin. The first sin was when Adam and his wife ate from the forbidden tree. The second recorded sin after that was when Cain killed his brother Abel. “When man began to multiply on the face of the land…the LORD saw that wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:1, 5) ESV.
God finally got fed up and said, “My spirit shall not contend with man forever” (Genesis 6:3) ESV. He also made it so where people can only live to be 120 years old. “And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the LORD said, ‘I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them’ ” (Genesis 6:6,7) ESV.
But there was a righteous man named Noah. God was planning to destroy every living person, but afterwards he would repopulate the earth through Noah’s family so he told Noah to make a huge boat that we commonly call “the ark”. Noah built the ark and it probably took him a year to build it. God gave him the instructions on the structure of the boat. He was to make it 45 ft. high, 450 ft. long, and 75 ft. wide. There was one door to the boat and three decks. Now people had never seen rain before so when Noah suddenly talked about a flood, the people thought he was a crazy old nut.
But every type of animal went in, 2 of every animal, male and female. Then Noah and his family went in, and a week later the flood waters poured down for 40 days and nights. Noah was 600 years old when this happened (Genesis 7:6). During that time, everyone and every animal that was outside of the boat drowned. The earth was covered with water for 150 days.
Another 150 days - 5 months the boat rested on Mt. Ararat. 40 days later Noah opened a window and let a raven fly out but it returned because the ground wasn’t dry and the water was too high. Finally when Noah was 601 years old, the ground was dry!
Finally when all of this was over, God told Noah, “Be fruitful and multiply [repopulate the earth]…Never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth…I have set my [rain] bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant [agreement not to kill people with a flood ever again] between me and the [humans]” (Genesis 9:7,11,13) ESV.
