The Word was God
JW's argue this should be translated as "the Word was a god" since theos is anarthrous. However, they don't follow that rule consistently (even in the same chapter). Plus, that "rule" is not consistent with Greek grammar. Colwell's rule is in play here. That doesn't mean it's definite either though. In most situations like this, the preverbal predicate nominative is qualitative. That fits the best of all the choices. "The Word was with God, and the Word was that which makes God God." I guess a gloss would be "divine."
