"as I have loved you
In this passage Yeshua (Jesus) says he is giving them a "new command", yet it wasn't really new if all he told them was "Love one another." After all, when the Torah expert asked him, "Rabbi, what is the most important..." Yeshua answered him from Talmud, "You shall love Elohim...and you shall love your neighbor..." But here Yeshua adds, "...as I have loved you..." When he was asked "Why did Moses permit divorce?" He replied, "It is because of the limitations of human love." Now, he is commanding us to love with greater, God-like love. After all, while we were yet his enemy, didn't he die for us? If we cannot even love those who are believers with that sort of love, what does that say of us? Moses permitted divorce because people with uncircumcised hearts only have selfish love. What about the church in America today? Do we excel at Messiah's level of love within the walls of the building? Within the walls of our families? Outside the walls of our church and/or home to those who are our enemy? Maybe love is a whole lot deeper than just 4 letters on a Halmark card. Here is a final thought - we can give away what we have, but it is impossible to give away something you do not have. Selah.
