so recently i attended this event at a nearby coffee shop that was put on by a friend of a friend. the occasion was called wine and worship.

what this was, was an occasion to break the mold with a bunch of people to get together and have conversation with each other, whom may have never met, and have fellowship with one another over a glass (or three) of wine. followed by worship music and sing-a-long songs.

in my visit, i noticed one major problem. the occasion itself. as a close friend of a fully recovered past of alcoholism, i find that this ministry is all too restricting. in 1 corinthians 9, paul talks about being all things to all people. so if we’re in a setting of wine in worship services, what then of the alcoholics? if you look back in chapter 8 you’ll also find that he is also willing to sacrifice part of his everyday if that act makes another Christian stumble.

outside of that biblical point, bringing in any substance to freely partake of that causes any form of inebriation into a intimacy of worship is just wrong on so many levels. things could get out of hand, wrongful acts could be committed, etc.

and besides that, there was no leadership to oversee this so called night of worship. it upsets me that people find things okay in a congregational setting, that may not be accurate with the Word of God. many scriptures have been misconstrued and out of context to support such an irrational decision.

but to make clear on my opinion of alcohol alone is this: i see no problem in moderation, however all things should be committed in wisdom and in consideration to others. if it offends your brother (or sister) do away with it lest you make a manrelase or fall short.

the verdict: alcohol and worshiping God is a very bad mix. i feel like it cheapens the intimacy with God that Christ desires.

what do you think?
