Hebrews 9:22 ESV

People often wonder why God demanded blood to be shed for the forgiveness of sins. Why couldn't he just forgive in the first place, they might ask. Why blood?

First of all, God gets to decide what form of penalization because he's God! Second, God was sending - shouting - a message through the ages. That message counters the humanistic message that "sin isn't so bad...just say you're sorry." Blood reminds us that sin brings about death in our lives and the lives of those we touch.

Sin is an awful holocaust that has befallen civilization. It is ruthless in it's consequences. And only blood truly satisfies the pain caused by sin. This is at least one reason why Christ will forever bear the marks of the cross.
