The parable of the wise and foolish builders is a common parable that depicts the way people receive the word of God - some take it and build their lives around it while others ignore it and live their lives in their own ways. If you look closely at these verses one thing you'll notice is it isn't a question on if the storms of life are going to come in, but when. No matter how your life is going, you one day will face a storm of life.
* You receive notice from your employer that your job will no longer be required.
* Your doctor asks you to come in to discuss your recent lab tests.
* Your mother calls you in the middle of the night with some news about your dad.
* A police officer knocks on your door and asks if you are the parents of a child.
* Your wife tells you that she is no longer in love with you.
The list can go on and on.
Even for the strongest "Super-Christian", the storms still come in. What makes the difference is that the foundation we build our lives on will help us to whether the storm.
As a product of the 1980's, one of my favorite movies is "The Money Pit". A couple buys a fancy house that turns out to be falling apart. Many, many months later, and after hiring different contractors and workers, they finally get the house restored, but during the course of the movie the couple contemplates filing for divorce. In a final scene, the head contractor comments "I thought this house was a lost cause, but the foundation was good. If you have a good foundation, you can fix anything." The couple then realize their relationship was built on a good foundation and they make amends. If our foundation is built on the Word of God and the teachings of Jesus, then when the storms of life take away everything else, we will be able to rebuild. But if we don't build on that foundation, when the storms of life come in we will lose everything.
It is not a matter of IF the storms of life are going to come in, you build on the solid rock of Jesus Christ for WHEN the storms come in.
