This scripture is amazing to me. Throughout the NT people are sent together to go and change the culture which they are sent. This verse is yet another example of how Paul tell Timothy to surround himself with God fearing people to encourage his exploration of God. As Americans we have this notion that "godliness" is only a solo flight. This is totally the antonym of what the Bible is showing. Without support from people who love the Lord with all they are we are lost in satan's playground. This is exactly what he wants. Put it this way would you rather fight one person in a dark alley or a gang of fired up people with armor and swords and flaming tongues? what? i would choose the mono e mono fight any day. We need a "gang," if you will, so that when we are at our weekest we don't have to fend off THE attacker. This notion of God being a personal experience is a crock! No where is that found in the Bible. There are instances where people go off on their own to have revalations but God uses them to go back and teach others and have followers. It's astonishing how much WE let our culture affect our religion. I am just as guilty of this. Until very recently i wouldn't allow any one into my spiritual life. I have grown leaps and bounds since i found my posse.
