I don’t want to simply live for myself; I want to live beyond myself. I want my life to make a difference. I want my life to be an example people can follow.

1 Timothy 4:12,16 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity…Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourselves and your hearers.

Being an example is not just for a chosen few. I believe we need to do away with this false way of thinking. The truth is every person is an example. The greatest question is what sort of example are we. You might say, “Well I just fly under the radar. There’s nothing really bad in my life but I’m not really what you would call a ‘good’ example”. Well unless we intentionally decide otherwise, that will be our legacy.

We must come back to that word ‘love’ again and one of the greatest definitions of it; giving at the expense of ourselves. I want to challenge us again to live beyond ourselves, to live for others, to be an example, a role-model in every aspect of life. Do you know what? We can. That’s right, you and I can, and indeed we must, be examples that others can follow. Living this way brings glory to the Father, just as Jesus did by leaving a legacy for us to follow.

How’s my example going in my speech, in my actions, in my marriage, in my family, in my purity, in my work ethic, in sharing my faith, in loving God and His Word?

“Father help me be an example to all who read the script of my life. Help me to bring glory to You just like Your Son Jesus did.”
