In these verses we see Mephibosheth turning his back on the lavish Grace that King David had given him in 2 Samual 9. Mephibosheth was by his own admission unworthy of the Grace that King David gave him by restoring to him all the lands of Saul and inviting him to sit at the Kings table (a place of prestige). And yet, even after seeing the Christlike mercy and love of King David, when presented an opportunity, Mephibosheth becomes a traitor against King David (although he later denies doing so)

How Could He? David, the man after God's own heart extended love that would win over the most brittle of men. And yet that love is rejected in times of trouble for the chance of regaining power and lust. No wonder that the love of money is called the root of all evil. Lust is the orginal sin, and we are all bitten by it.

We should never think so highly of ourselves that we would not turn our back on the lavish love that Jesus extended us for power and prestige. Rather, walking in humility and reliance on one greater than ourselves, the person of Jesus Christ, is the essence of strength. Meekness, power under submission, is the ultimate strength to keep us from falling like Mephibosheth did.
