Be ye doers of the word
Something I wrote in my journal today made me think I should share my plans with more people so they might be led to do the same.
I've been learning a lot about God and His will for my life lately. And a Scripture that keeps coming up is James 1:22
James 1:22 (New Living Translation)
[22] But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.
I think part of what we should do to be doers of word is to give not only to our local church but any ministry that has blessed us. I listen to many podcasts from all kinds of ministries like Focus On the Family and others that teach the bible daily. What I feel led to do is above and beyond my 10% Tithing I should put together a giving calender so that each payday I can bless a ministry that I an blessed by regularly. Many ministries are getting by on smaller gifts like $10 or $20. So my plan is each payday I'll go to my calender and look at whose turn it is that week and write them a check and mail it to them. I think to many people are blessed by ministries who are completely capable of giving to the ministry to help them do their work but for some reason don't. We need to put seeds in the ground and keep these ministries running. I think it is wrong to be blessed by someone and not send a gift every now and then.
In addition I'm going out later on today and buying up the last of the "New Believer's NLT pocket bibles" from The Gospel Shoppe. (That's my local Christian Book Store) the idea behind buying these is to have a couple in my car or bag so that if I run into someone and feel led to give them the word of God I have a small inexpensive bible to put in their hands. I always keeo a Pocket NT on me so I can use it if I need to to bring someone to Christ or just to read if I'm stuck in a doctors office. It is always handy to have the word of God on you. But I think sometimes we overlook the power of the Scriptures to save people. Even if the person you physically give the bible to doesn't read it or isn't interested you never know, they might leave it on the table of a coffee shop for someone to find and they might need the Word that day. Or they may bring it home and plop it down on the kitchen table and their spouse may read it. (Isaiah 55:11) I know you can't send the Word of God out into the world and have it return void based on Isaiah 55:11. So just having these $5 bibles on you can be a real blessing.
I also plan on inviting a few people from Church and then everyone from my apartment building to come over for a bible study on a Tuesday night or something after work. This could be a great way to lead people to Christ. Even just order some Gospel Tracts and slip them under doors or peg them to the bulletin board in the front of the building.
The main thing here is we need to get out and do God's work based on the Great Commission found in Matthew Chapter 28.
We also need to know God's word well so that we can give the Holy Spirit something to work with if He leads us across someone's path who needs to hear the Good News. I think we even need to start memorizing Scripture so that we have it on the tip of our tongues to use at the flip of a switch.
