Like just about everyone else I tend to run right past these Pauline openings so I can get to "the good stuff" further down the page. But when you stop and look at verse one from the perspective of how we ought to define ourselves, we find something radically counter-cultural.

In verse one Paul defines himself totally in relationship to Jesus and His Gospel! Paul knew exactly who he was and what he was doing in life, and that sure knowledge came from his relationship with Jesus and His Gospel.

We could all learn a lot from this. Instead of looking to the culture or family roots or my relationships, I ought to be look to Christ and His Gospel, for it is there and only there that the believer finds his true identity.
