1 Samuel 2:6-7 ESV

Daily I think, "I need to be productive. The future of the business, the well-being of my family hang on my efforts."

Oh Patrick, you little fool. Yes, you must work hard. Today you must be productive, but not because your family's well-being hangs on your work. You must work hard because you are called to do all things as unto the Lord. You are called to make much of your savior with each breathe--therefore work hard. Do not be fooled, oh little one, you are not the primary caretaker of your family. God is. The Lord kills and brings to life. He alone makes poor and makes rich. If God ordains that you and your family are to be poor than no effort on your part will thwart that. Morevover, the nature of grace is such that all that it asks, it provides.

Oh God, may I rest in your sovereignty today as so many things in life seem uncertain to me. What solace there is that there is nothing uncertain to you! You hold my future surely in your hand. What safer place could I be--rich or poor.
