I am A Great Sinner; but He is A Great Savior – I am Second: Brian “Head” Welch

Now, this post is very special to me because it truly defines redemption for someone that I used to idolize growing up in my teen years. If you have read my testimony then you know I was mildly obsessed with Korn growing up. I owned every album, behind the scenes VHS and memorized every one of their songs. They truly defined my later teen years. I saw them in concert in 1997 for the Life is Peachy album when they toured with Limp Bizkit (During the infamous Fred Durt “Flip Out” when someone stole his red cap) and Helmet opened for them. I remember spending COUNTLESS HOURS trying to figure out the lyrics to Twist and Ball Tongue, trying to decipher exactly what “Hit me clown, because I am not form your town, no, hit me clown” really means and why Jonathan Davis was “Sick of the same old thing, so I dig a hole and bury pain“. Korn truly developed my love for ADIDAS sports wear and made we learn the guitar.
All that to say, I was a pretty big fan of OLD SCHOOL Korn. Then I Jesus came into my life and showed me how morbid, demonic and dark their music truly is. Jesus showed me that I don’t need to be sick of the same old thing, and I don’t need to bury my pain – but give it to Jesus because he cares for me. [1 Peter 5:6-7] and that the “life” that Korn sings about in “Got the Life” is a false assurance of security. I loved their music so much, that it took me approximatley 1 year after my redemption to kick it out of my life. I still come across it on the radio and am tempted to listen but I know it stirs up frustration and hones in on my sinful desires to just “break stuff”.
With this background, when I heard that Brian “Head” Welch claimed Jesus as Lord and Savior – I immediately said “NO WAY!” Then I come across many interviews where he is explicitly quoting scripture talking about Jesus – I was shocke, Brian “Head” Welch will be in Heaven!?! Shocking.
Therefore, this amazing story of redemption is something I want to share with you. I want to be clear about a couple of things. First, I am not endorsing Brian “Head” Welch as a role model for all Christians; rather, I want to point you to his life before and the AMAZING REDMPTION in his life. This man has been redeemed from the domain of darkness and is now living in the Kingdom of Jesus. THAT redemption is the focus of this. He has made some bad choices since his salvation regarding his animosty toward hyper-conservative and the “religious” and he has made some HIGH controversial music videos. But for us to condemn him for such errors would be hypocritcal, because we too fail.
However, aside from all that – this man has truly been redeemd and it is evident in his testimony of radical repentance.
For His Glory,
Judson
