Making Love Last | Thursday
Continuing the discussion about "working out your own salvation" in verse 13 it suggests that God plays an active role in any sort of "works" that exist above and beyond the grace that saves us.
I love the thought that God works in us "to will." In my mind the word "will" often goes with "strong" as in "strong willed." Which is probably a good summary of me - especially when younger. So the fact that God works in me so that I "will" to do better is incredible. But it doesn't stop there. Not only does He work in us "to will" but also "to do" those things that are right. And not to fulfill some self-righteous act or check a box on some religious tally sheet, but "for His good pleasure." In other words, by living right we actually make God smile. I'm assuming it's like a parent smiling when their child uses manners, or brings home a good report card. These things don't change your level of love and acceptance for your child - but your smile is just a bit bigger.
Verse 14 is definitely for me. The whole "strong willed" thing often leads to complaining and disputing. A little help in this area is much appreciated. Back in the day I was Mr. Road Rage, but today I simply snarl and go about my business...
Verse 15 is the result of keeping that "strong willed" behavior in check. My behavior will tend to be more "blameless" and less "harmful" when I'm following His leading. And the more right choices I make, the bigger the gap will become between my behavior and the behavior the world sees as normal.
This gap forces there to be a bigger difference in the light and dark factor. The greater the differences between my behavior and the worlds the brighter my light shines to those searching for it.
The obvious danger is to shine the light so brightly that you burn and blind people.
Use the light responsibly!!!!
