Just reading in Mark at the end of Jesus' life, my focus was drawn to Peter. A man with a good heart, with an undeniable devotion to Jesus. But he fell asleep when Jesus asked him to "keep watch" (Mark 14:38-42).
And even before that as Jesus sat with the twelve at the last supper, Peter said he would never betray Jesus. Even after Jesus said Peter would deny Him 3x before the rooster crows, Peter said "even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you." (Mark 14:29-31).
I honestly think Peter was sincere, but aren't we all? In the moment when we feel closest to God, we think we can face anything right now and not waiver. I keep thinking how Peter must have felt when he heard the rooster crow 3x. The realization of what he did...or didn't do. Then hiding for 3 days. But the joy and empowerment he felt when he heard, "Go tell the disciples and Peter He is alive" (Mark 16:7). The I can imagine how Peter felt after seeing Jesus for the first time since the resurrection. The love, forgiveness and acceptance in Jesus eyes.
God forgive me for my doubt, unbelief and denial I go through and have gone through. Teach me to be "watchful".
"lest He come suddenly and find you asleep, and what I say to you I say to all BE ON ALERT". (Mark 13:36-37).
