What is Death?
Clearly Adam and Eve did not die immediately in the way we usually think of death when they ate the forbidden fruit. But they did experience a far worse death.
I have heard that the Hebrew word for death implies separation. Physical death is when our body separates from our spirit. Spiritual death is when our spirit separates from God, when we lose our connection. This is what happened to Adam & Eve.
How tragic that when God approached they hid from Him. They had experienced a very intimate relationship with God, walking with Him in the Garden -.learning, listening, talking, and fellow-shipping. Now nothing but fear was left.
That is the affect of sin. Even for those of us who have been born again. Those who have reconnected our spirits to God, by trusting Him as our Lord and Savior. This connection can never be broken because it is kept by God's power, but we can stop the flow. When we allow sin to get a grip on us, to master us, to become habit we interfere with the connection. There is nothing left but fear. That is no kind of relationship to have with God, our maker and Savior who loves us unconditionally.
